Fat "awakens" Tuberculosis

Fat "awakens" Tuberculosis US researchers conducted a study of the factors that play a key role in the development of latent tuberculosis. Data from the study may help develop new strategies for treatment of this disease.

Professor Russell and his group at Cornell University in New York, USA, found a link between bacteria that cause tuberculosis And fat cells.

Microbacteria TB   cause macrophages (immune system cells that infect bacteria) to accumulate fat . This process can cause a "revival" of tuberculosis. After the initial tuberculosis infection Infected immune cells in the body can be "connected" in the lung cell mass. This structure protects the bacteria from destruction by the immune system. They can be stored, so for a long time without any visible symptoms. Only a small group of people there are respiratory problems. But after the release of the protective structure, the infectious bacteria are able in a short time to destroy a person's lungs.

While researchers know very little about the precise reasons for the revitalization of the infectious bacteria. Scientists continue their monitoring of the subjects to determine the exact cause. Professor Russell says that their research is very important for the development of new methods treatment TB   - Vaccines and chemotherapy programs.
