Many women mammograms save lives, and for some of them deadly. Scientists have found that a specific gene mutation owner at risk of becoming victims of breast cancer just because of radiation received during a mammogram.
Researchers from the Netherlands Cancer Institute have found a direct link between the risk of breast cancer and mammography . Obtained in the course of this procedure additional radiation is harmful to women with mutated genes BRCA1 or BRCA2. Therefore, it is more appropriate for the prevention of an MRI scan, which does not use radiation.
These genetic mutations is a one woman out of every 400. Because of the risk of becoming a victim of mutations breast cancer It grows up to five times as compared with women who do not have these genetic defects. The researchers watched the 2000 women older than 18 who have a mutation of a gene.
Approximately 850 of them later developed breast cancer. About half of the victims of this disease previously made X-rays themselves, or were, at least through a mammogram. Researchers estimate that for every 100 women aged 30 years with a mutation of a gene for 40 years will be the 9 patients with breast cancer.
But if they make themselves at least one mammogram before age 30, this number will grow to 40, that is, increased fivefold. That is why the modern methods of cancer prevention should be adjusted based on the genetic analysis of patients.
Too many women with mutations in BRCA1 or BRCA2 voluntarily go through a double mastectomy while still being perfectly healthy. They do so not later worry about their own health and life. After all, even though regular check-ups, the disease can still be detected too late. Some types of breast tumors are developing very rapidly and behave aggressively.
