Professor Paige (Page) and colleagues from the University of Huddersfield created a new drug called a beta-ethane-camphor. Usually drugs to reach the brain, it is necessary to pass the "blood brain barrier" - a natural defense mechanism that protects the brain, but also represents a serious obstacle for the drug treatment of neurological diseases. This formulation easily released into the bloodstream.
A new drug that protects our brain from the effects of alcohol
The study showed that the brain function under the influence of alcohol and deteriorated accompanied by inflammation and loss of brain cells. However, the effects were reduced in rats that received ethan-beta-camphor.
"One of the things that makes the alcohol - it destroys certain cells of the brain that are important for orientation," - says Professor Page. "But the combination of alcohol and our preparation can reduce the harm."
He explained that the brain protects itself by means of "glial cells", which are increasing under the influence of alcohol. Combining beta-ethane-camphor and alcohol reduces glial cells.
Professor Page said that the study is conducted for ten years. Draft continues includes study to find a compound that is better than ethane-beta-camphor. In the longer term there is a possibility that such compounds might help with the treatment of diseases such as Alzheimer's disease and dementia, which are also the result of loss of activity of the brain.
