Boys are more likely born stillborn

In a large study found that more boys are born stillborn than girls. The article was published in the scientific journal BMC Medicine. The study examined more than 30 million births worldwide, and found that the risk of stillbirth in males is 10% higher. This corresponds to a loss of about 100 000 additional male babies per year.

The findings may help explain why some pregnancies are not. In about 25% of cases the cause of stillbirth is unknown. The most common cause - the anomaly of the placenta, but it is often unclear where these anomalies were formed.

"The numbers speak for themselves - the disparity between men's and women's stillbirth is astounding. Stillbirth is a common phenomenon observed even in rich countries with a good health system: in the UK every day is born 11 stillbirths. If we understand why babies are male prostrate higher risk of stillbirth - it will be the first step towards the development of new methods of prevention and the prevention of stillbirth at high risk. "

Although the incidence of stillbirths in less developed countries, the study showed that the percentage of stillborn boys remains high in high-income countries, and low.

The only exception to this rule were China and India, which is widely practiced abortions. Data from these countries showed almost the same sex ratio stillbirths than in other countries.

Existing programs have found that when children develop in utero is not properly reduced rate of stillbirths, thereby providing an early warning system. Nevertheless, these programs do not take into account the sex of the child.

Over the past 15 years in countries with both high-income and low incidence of stillbirths has not diminished.

United Kingdom from developed countries has the highest percentage of stillbirths, and is one in 260 pregnancies.
