IUDs protect against cancer

IUDs protect against cancer IUDs reduce women's risk of cervical cancer. This is the conclusion scientists conducted a study involving 20,000 women.

According to a study published in the prestigious medical journals «Lancet Oncology», those women who used intrauterine levonorgestrel-releasing system (LNG-IUS), had almost half the risk of cervical cancer.

A study involving 20,000 women confirmed the earlier doctors suggested that spiral reduce the risk of tumors in the uterus. However, it was not clear whether they relate directly to the cervical cancer .

As explained in this issue Dr. Xavier Kastelsage, there is a reason why the process of insertion and removal of the spiral removes precancerous condition. According to experts, the use of the system (LNG-IUD) is in a woman's so-called long-term immune response, thus reducing the likelihood of infection, which leads to the development of cancer.

However, use of the LNG-IUD does not affect the actual risk of infection infectious papillomavirus (HPV), although spiral and reduce the possibility of the rapid development of the disease by almost half.

The duration of use of the spiral also has a significant impact on the risk of cervical cancer. After the first year the risk is reduced by almost half. As for the protective effect, according to experts, it is stored for 10 years after the end of use.

As a result, full-scale studies have had serious medical reason to talk about the beneficial effects of using the LNG-IUD. The use of spirals allows women to actually reduce the risk of escalating into papillomavirus cervical cancer .
