American scientists from the University of San Diego conducted a study to determine the effect of hookah smoking on the body of smokers and non-smokers. They found that under the influence of smoke in the body gets increased amounts of benzene that doubles the risk of certain types of cancer, including leukemia.
Smoking hookah
A team of US scientists has proven negative impact on the human body hookah. When smoking a hookah a person inhales benzene, which belongs to the first group (the most dangerous) toxic elements. According to WHO, there is no safe level of exposure to it. Therefore, the smoke from a hookah, which is the source of benzene increases the risk of leukemia .
These conclusions came after the experts study involving 208 people. Half of the subjects smoked a hookah indoors, while others just at this moment are close by. Thus, scientists have created the natural conditions, the smoke spread through the hall, and affects the body both smoking and non-smoking establishment. After the experiment, we analyzed the results of samples taken at the level in the blood of participants SPMA-acid, that is a metabolite of benzene. Those who smoked indicators increased 4 and 2 times, nonsmokers - 2, 6 times.
"Smoking tobacco through hookah involves the use of a burning coal needed for heating the vessel. Inhaling large amount of smoke from the charcoal in the body gets its combustion products - toxic substances and carcinogens. Since the level of safe exposure to benzene is not necessary to impose restrictions on hookah smoking in public places, - commented on the results of his research Nada Kassem, deputy director of the Behavioral Epidemiology and Public Health of the University of San Diego.
Researchers obtained data suggest that hookah is not a safe alternative to smoking cigarettes. Its smoke also contains toxic substances which may cause cancer lung leukosis , Heart disease and other serious health problems. (READ MORE)
